Prescription Drugs We Treat During Detox

Our prescription drug detox program provides safe, medically supervised care for individuals experiencing withdrawal from a wide range of prescription medications.

Opioid Detox for Oxycodone, Fentanyl, and Prescription Painkillers

We treat a number of opioids during detox, including oxycodone, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers. Detox for these substances involves medically supervised withdrawal management to safely clear opioids from the body while minimizing severe physical and psychological symptoms. We utilize MAT, using buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone, to manage specific withdrawal side effects.

Benzodiazepine Detox for Xanax and Valium

Benzodiazepine detox for Xanax and Valium requires medically supervised tapering to prevent life-threatening complications like seizures and psychosis. Abrupt cessation is dangerous. Clinicians typically switch short-acting drugs like Xanax to long-acting ones like Valium to stabilize blood levels before gradually reducing the dose.

Stimulant Detox for Adderall and Ritalin

Stimulant detox for Adderall and Ritalin involves a medically supervised process to safely eliminate these prescription drugs from the body, typically lasting 7 days and extending up to two weeks for initial physical withdrawal symptoms to subside. In the process, our team addresses cravings, physical dependence, withdrawal risks, and co-occurring anxiety disorders and mental health conditions.

Alcohol and Prescription Drug Polysubstance Use

Polysubstance use involving alcohol and prescription drugs is a prevalent and dangerous practice where individuals consume alcohol alongside medications such as opioids, sedatives, stimulants, or sleeping pills. Individuals who use both substances at the same time carry a much higher potential for severe health consequences, overdose, and fatal outcomes.

Detox for Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Conditions

Detox is the critical first step for individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. We provide a medically supervised, non-hospital environment to safely manage withdrawal while addressing psychiatric symptoms. Dual-diagnosis care that treats both conditions simultaneously is essential, as untreated mental health issues significantly increase the risk of relapse and worsen withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, depression, and agitation.

What to Expect During Prescription Drug Detox

Knowing what to expect during prescription drug detox can help you feel more prepared as you begin treatment in a safe, medically supervised environment.

Medical Intake and Withdrawal Assessment

During your intake, our team will conduct a comprehensive medical screening and withdrawal assessment to determine the necessary level of care. We employ a full-time case manager and will also coordinate transportation during your rapid intake so you can begin your recovery journey.

Stabilization and Medication Support

Once you are made comfortable in your private room, the nursing team will initiate your treatment plan for medical detox. You will be provided with medication support for the detoxification process, including MAT and interventions for co-occurring behavioral health concerns. A nurse will monitor your blood pressure and withdrawal symptoms around the clock.

Nutrition, Rest, and Recovery

Our detox treatment center focuses on making your detox process as comfortable as possible. We keep our programming light and flexible, providing nutrient-rich, chef-prepared meals so you can focus on nutrition, rest, and recovery during your stay.

Holistic Support During Detox

Your routine will include light movement such as yoga and stretching, breathwork, Epsom salt baths, downtime, and other holistic support options to counteract withdrawal symptoms such as muscle aches and anxiety.

Preparing for the Next Level of Care

Planning for your next level of care begins at admission. Our medical professionals and concierge team will make the appropriate referrals to treatment programs offering evidence-based care for drug abuse, alcohol use disorder, and addiction treatment. These include inpatient and outpatient care, as well as sober living programs, depending on your needs.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) During Detox

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may be used during detox to help manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and improve comfort when clinically appropriate. As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, MAT supports a safer, more stable transition into the next phase of recovery.

How Buprenorphine and Suboxone Help Opioid Withdrawal

Buprenorphine and Suboxone (a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone) mitigate opioid withdrawal by acting as partial opioid receptor agonists. This means they stabilize brain chemistry without producing the intense euphoria or depressed respiration associated with full opioids.

Their partial activation blocks cravings and prevents withdrawal symptoms by occupying opioid receptors tightly enough to stop other opioids from binding. They are likewise gentle enough to allow individuals to maintain normal physiological function.

When Methadone or Naltrexone May Be
Used

Methadone is a full opioid agonist used to treat withdrawal symptoms and cravings during detoxification due to opioid use disorder by activating opioid receptors. However, it must be administered through a SAMHSA-certified Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) under strict federal regulations.

In contrast, naltrexone is an opioid antagonist that blocks opioid effects and is not used during active detox. It is only prescribed after a patient has been fully detoxed and abstinent for at least 7 to 14 days to avoid triggering severe withdrawal.

Medications Used During Benzodiazepine and Alcohol Detox

Benzodiazepines are the preferred first-line treatment for both alcohol withdrawal and benzodiazepine withdrawal, acting as cross-tolerant depressants that stabilize the nervous system.

Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) and diazepam (Valium) are long-acting agents preferred for preventing seizures and delirium tremens (DTs). Lorazepam (Ativan) and oxazepam (Serax) are short- to intermediate-acting agents, typically chosen for patients with liver failure or the elderly.

FDA-Approved Medications for Withdrawal Management

FDA-approved medications for opioid withdrawal management include buprenorphine, methadone, and lofexidine. Buprenorphine and methadone are approved for treating opioid use disorder (OUD) and effectively reduce withdrawal severity by 70 to 90% while decreasing cravings and relapse risk. Lofexidine is the first non-opioid medication specifically approved to manage physical symptoms of opioid withdrawal, such as sweating and tachycardia.

Our medical staff only prescribes medications as needed on a case-by-case basis.

Continuing Care After Prescription Drug Detox

Continuing care after drug detox helps build on the progress made during withdrawal management by providing ongoing support for lasting recovery.

Transitioning From Detox Into Residential Treatment

Detox is only the first step to recovery. Our case manager will provide referrals as needed to secure your spot in residential treatment if that is the best option for the next step in your care, including transportation coordination.

Outpatient Treatment and Ongoing Recovery Support

Outpatient treatment for drug use at a facility with accreditation can be an excellent part of your ongoing recovery plan, and our team will support your placement in an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a partial hospitalization program (PHP), or another outpatient treatment option.

Relapse Prevention and Long-Term Recovery Planning

Undergoing medically supervised detox results in higher outcomes for relapse prevention. Our team supports long-term recovery planning, helping you plot a course to lasting wellness. This includes continued medication support if appropriate.

Family Support During the Recovery Journey

If your family would like to be involved in your recovery journey, you can include them in treatment or allow them to facilitate your admission to detox for prescription drug withdrawal.

Finding the Right Level of Care After Detox

Locating the right level of care after detox does not need to be difficult. Our team will help you every step of the way, including transportation coordination.

When to Seek Help for Prescription Drug Addiction

Recognizing when to seek help for prescription drug addiction can be the first step toward receiving the professional care needed to achieve lasting recovery.

Signs of Prescription Drug Dependence

Signs of prescription drug dependence include drug tolerance and withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, shaking, nausea, and anxiety when the drug is stopped. Physical indicators often involve changes in sleep patterns, slurred speech, glassy eyes, and weight fluctuations. Behavioral signs include secrecy, mood swings, doctor shopping, and neglecting responsibilities.

When Withdrawal Symptoms Require Medical Attention

You should seek medical attention immediately for prescription drug withdrawal if you experience seizures, hallucinations, severe agitation, or confusion. These symptoms indicate potentially life-threatening conditions.

How Prescription Drug Misuse Impacts Daily Life

Prescription drug misuse significantly disrupts daily functioning through severe physical health risks, cognitive impairments, and psychological distress. Additionally, it alters brain chemistry, leading to addiction, tolerance, and dangerous withdrawal symptoms that interfere with work, school, and relationships.

FAQs

How long does prescription drug detox take?

Prescription drug detox typically takes between 5 and 10 days, though the timeline varies significantly based on the specific medication, dosage, duration of use, and individual health factors. The complete stabilization of the nervous system and resolution of psychological symptoms can extend over several weeks to months.

Opioid withdrawal is generally not directly life-threatening, unlike withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines, but it can be fatal due to severe secondary complications. These complications include:

  • Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
  • Aspiration of vomit
  • Relapse and overdose

Yes, Suboxone is commonly used during opioid detox to manage acute withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings. It is typically administered 12 to 24 hours after the last opioid use to avoid triggering severe withdrawal.

The medication is usually taken as a sublingual film or tablet that is dissolved under the tongue or inside the cheek. In clinical settings, it is often started at a low dose to ensure tolerance, then adjusted to a stable maintenance level that alleviates physical discomfort, allowing patients to transition safely into long-term recovery programs.

No. Medically supervised detox is the only safe method for Xanax withdrawal. Attempting to detox at home is strongly discouraged due to life-threatening risks such as grand mal seizures, psychosis, and death.

Yes. Detox can help with co-occurring mental health conditions by serving as the essential first step in a comprehensive, integrated treatment plan. While detox alone is not sufficient to treat underlying mental health disorders, it stabilizes physical health and removes substances that mask or exacerbate psychiatric symptoms, allowing for accurate diagnosis and effective therapy. Diamond Detox offers dual-diagnosis care for co-occurring mental health conditions during detox.

Detox ends when your body is purged of substances and you have reached medical stabilization. At this time, Diamond Detox will support your transition to another treatment program or facility by providing referrals and clinical records and by coordinating your transportation.

Detox is only the first step in recovery. You will need to continue care in an outpatient, inpatient, or residential program to reduce your risk of relapse and overdose death and increase your opportunities for long-term wellness.
